AUW Training - The Famous Dynamic Breach
AUW Training = Advanced Urban Warfare.
I was up against DARC. This was my first time defending a structure against a group of people that were trained and knew what they were doing.
When these guys hit the door to the room that I was in, they came in so fast that I didn’t even get the chance to respond. I was “dead” within about 10 seconds.
Lessons Learned
- When an experienced breacher comes through that door, they are going so FAST, you won’t have time to react. This is why your perimeter delays are so absolutely vital.
- It really PAYS to have something else up your sleeve besides a rifle or a pistol. Like a grenade or a claymore. So that you don’t have to expose yourself in order to eliminate your enemy. (No need to aim.)
- Full auto effects your aim. The point man (the first one through the door) never hit me because he couldn’t control the weapon. It was guy #3 that was finally able to “kill” me because he was using semi-auto. So don’t use full auto and expect to get hit anything.
- Practice, practice, practice! Find the flaws in your battle plans, your reaction times, and your assets while training, NOT while in a real fight.
- KISS. Keep it simple stupid. Don’t map out everything and exactly how you should respond. By keeping a general outline and honing your improvising skills through force on force training (practice drills with someone posing as the enemy), you are much more likely to win the battle. One thing goes wrong, and you can immediately alter your reaction because you made room for errors or malfunctions.
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.
Accept certain failure as a part of life. It WILL happen. When it happens, and how badly is totally up to you. If you reserve all of your plans for the real thing, then you can expect it to fail.
The more that you work those plans and improve upon them beforehand through training, the more certain your chances are for victory when it is for real.
