Also known as the “Slim Jim” or a wire J-pole. It is a fantastic antenna for VHF/UHF that is made from 55-1/2 ” of ladder line. This antenna can be hung from a tree, from the drapes on your window, or even hidden in your attic. It’s only limited by your imagination. While it’s not rocket science, it is science.
The only way to increase your range of communication is by elevation or power. Since power is expensive and elevation always out preforms power anyways, why not go for elevation? By increasing the height and quality of the antenna you can increase your range. The Flex-J is so effective that it is used by several Military Special Operation Units as well as several search/rescue teams here in the USA.
They are lightweight and easy to carry in a pack. The Flex-J weights approximately 1.5- 2 lbs and rolls up to an approximate 8″ diameter. All you need to do is throw a line over a tree limb and pull it up and you have a very powerful antenna for your radio. This will increase your range by double at 20′ elevation!
When tested here at Tackleberry Solutions, we used a Beofing GT-3TP radio pushing 6.4 watts and broadcasting at approximately 5 miles range on 146 MHz. With the Flex-J connected and the antenna at 20′ of elevation, commo link-up was established at 12 miles. This test was conducted during the Springtime and in eastern NC, thus vegetation, heavy tree lines, and bodies of water were a factor. As you may know, water and heavy vegetation will absorb radio signals, thus decreasing the range of the radio.
All Flex-Js are: SWR tested and tweaked for maximum performance (designed to operate on 136-174/400-520 MHz), wrapped with waterproof tape to weatherproof it, have a 20′ long RG 58 coax with PL 259 connector, 1-foot long jump cable with female SMA connector and SO 239 connector. This is so that you can connect this antenna to most mobile radio, base station radio, or handheld radio making it very versatile. No matter if you’re using this antenna as a base station antenna, packing it in your Ops/Go bag, or carrying it in your commo vehicle to increase your range while in the field; this antenna is sure to get the job done, increase your range of communication, and be fast and easy to set up or takedown.
