Personality
Axel took his test on 8/8/2022 and scored a B without question.
Overall, this is a very good personality to have in your home if you are looking for a serious protection dog. However, I would advise that you have decent experience working and training with dogs before you decide to undertake a canine with this amount of ambition.
Service work examples that would work well with this personality score:
- Police work
- Military canine
- Personal Protection
- Search & Rescue
While a canine that scores a B will be eager to work and learn, he will tend to be a little on the proactive side. Meaning that a B type personality would much rather handle any threat quickly as opposed to waiting for it to escalate.
In conjunction with that, he will be a great family pet so long as you are consistent with his exercise and training.
Furthermore, caution should be exercised when you have visitors. Axel will be protective of his pack (i.e. his family) and will be suspicious of outsiders. Lots of socialization starting at a young age and consistent training is vital.
Places Where Axel Has Been Socialized
- Grocery Stores
- Post Office
- Park
- Neighbor's Farm
- Lots of Road Trips
- Colledge Dorm
- Ferry
- The Beach/Dock
- Restaurants
I've actually been very impressed with Axel's behavior when I take him into town. He is calm, sociable and shows no fear. Furthermore, he is quickly becoming familiar with the leash, riding in the car, and when to sit.
Training Received
While I currently have not been able to work with him as extensively as I would like (due to an intern shortage), he does catch on quickly and is eager to please.
Axel is on the exposure and confidence building level of his training. Which is to say that his training sessions are focused on getting familiar with receiving treats, building trust in the handler, and helping him feel loved in order to foster confidence.
In conjunction with that, first time commands come through body language and hand gestures. Once he gets that down, we will work on verbal commands. Current training exposure are as follows:
- Potty Training
- Manners
- no jumping up
- no nipping
- no pawing for attention
- no begging or eating food off the table
- sit and wait for permission to enter or leave (no door darting)
- Sit
- Lie Down
- Heel
- Come
Be aware that these are things that he has been exposed to. Perfection to obedience depends heavily upon several factors to include his comfort level, the number of distractions, etc.
Interns and One on One Training
Axel has worked with our intern Audrey Fleming. She has helped with his training, socialization and manners.

Socialization and Loud Noises
During the weekend Nov 11-13, 2022 - Axel went with Audrey to the beach for fun and training. He spent some time on a boat and got to meet lots of people.
This was done to increase his confidence and help him become more fearless. During this time, Audrey's personal safety alarm was accidentally activated making a loud, high-pitched noise unexpectedly. At first, Audrey was worried that such a loud noise was going to scare Axel. However, he just calmly looked at her curiously.
In summary, the fact that he was calm during a loud, and unexpected noise is further indication of a great personality for service or protection training.

Videos
The video shown below is a quick example of training that my intern Audrey has done with Axel on the introductory level.
First, is tug of war. To explain, getting the canine familiar with and excited about play sets the stage for protection training. *Note his high play drive. This is a good indication for protection training.
Second, exposing Axel to knew things with his experience by the ocean. Notice how he shows no fear and is curious. Confidence is important.
Third you'll see him smelling around a fence where Audrey has hidden treats for him to find. This prepares him for two things:
- Search & Rescue training by encouraging him to use his nose.
- Protection training by encouraging him to patrol the yard and check for abnormalities.
