Current Training

Once you place your deposit, Río will be scheduled to complete 3 - 4 weeks of formal basic training. After which, he will be familiar with:

  • Leash Manners
  • Sit
  • Stay
  • Come
  • Basic Manners (no jumping, drop it, etc.)
  • Be Gentle With Small Dogs And Children

Río's training ques and how to handle him can be provided via video, however, I strongly recommend in-person pickup so that we can teach Río's commands and provide guidance as needed in order to establish authority as his new owner.

Personality

Río took his test on 9/17/2022 and ultimately scored a C. This is because he has an interesting mix of all sorts of scores ranging from As down to Ds. As a result, his average was right in the middle. He is also a little shy.

Río is very sweat hearted and super concerned about pleasing his handler. I've not seen him exhibit any fear with strangers and while he has shown some caution, I've seen a lot of potential during his confidence building sessions.

What does a type C personality mean?

A canine that is a C is the best personality for a family who is looking to keep their children safe. A dog that scores a C is likely to be very loving, patient and protective when needed.

Type of service work recommended for this personality score:

  • Personal Protection
  • Search & Rescue
  • Emotional Therapy

While they will need to be socialized and trained consistently, they will not typically require a whole lot of effort. Some skill will be needed in order to establish an Alpha role as its owner. However, with enough practice and study, even novice dog owners can learn how to handle this type of protection dog.

A dog with a type C drive will not exactly be trusting of visitors, but are very unlikely to bite unless provoked or told to (in conjunction with their training.) They may even warm up to a few people who come over if they judge them to be safe. Introducing the dog to the visitor in a friendly and calm manner can help smooth over any ice.

Social Outing Assessment 12/4/2022

Social outing assessments are conducted on a one-on-one basis where we take the puppy out into the world and see how they react to numerous experiences. Major factors that we consider for this is how they react to strangers, automatic doors, vehicle rides, etc.

This is done in preparation for potential work as a service or protection dog since behavior and socialization are a major factor for that type of work. Furthermore, having a well socialized Doberman is a vital foundation if you're looking for an excellent quality family pet.

My intern, Audrey was able to help with Río's social outing assessment. We started out at a local store and quickly determined that he needed more time to build up his confidence. While I strongly suspect he is experiencing a fear stage (which is totally normal), he still showed no fear towards strangers.

However, I had to pick him up in order to get him out of the car. Once out, he was cautious about proceeding forward. The impression I got from watching his body language was that he wasn't afraid of the environment so much as he was afraid that he was in trouble.

As a result, we decided to turn this assessment into a confidence building session. I let Audrey take over and agreed to meet back with her in a few hours. Below are her notes on his training.

Audrey's Notes On Río's Outing

*Note* This text isn't a direct quote from Audrey but lengthened into sentences as she used shorthand notes to keep up with live observations.

At the start, Río's back legs were shaking. However, he showed no fear of strangers and was very loving. He would lick new friends and allow pets.

While he was nervous to walk at the beginning, he gradually gained confidence of his surroundings. Although he was particularly cautious around some hanging bags on a shelf.

I was impressed to note that he had no accidents while in the store as we had not yet fully been able to vet him on the potty training.

On the way over to the dorms, he fell asleep in my truck and took quite a long nap. It is possible that his behavior at the store was impacted by his being tired.

While at the college campus, he let people he didn't know love on him, even when he was asleep in my truck.

Side note: No fear of strangers is actually a good sign for potential protection training. (Although he will have to build more confidence in general - this should come with time and practice.) A dog that is confident around strangers can think more clearly and is better able to judge friendly stranger from dangerous stranger. Conversely, automatic aggression/mistrust towards strangers often correlates directly with fearful aggression. Click here to learn more.

Next, I took him to the park for a little training and more confidence building. He paid attention while I worked with him on "heal" and "sit."

When it was time to go back to the truck, he showed a lot of excitement which was a great improvement to his earlier, timid behavior.

Summary

Despite the fact that Río was going through a fear stage at the time of his assessment, he still did really well. While he will need to be re-evaluated as he exits his fear stage to make sure his confidence returns like it should, Río shows potential for being an excellent family pet or emotional support.

His extensive patience with children, understanding the strength of his teeth and being careful are very promising signs. So much so that I would even recommend him as a great therapy dog for special needs children.

Current Training

Right now, Río responds to hand signals but has not yet mastered verbal commands.

I like to tailor a trained dog's commands to the needs of their family which include manners and basic obedience.
